The structure of cochlioquinol (1), a new compound isolated from a cul
ture of the plant pathogenic fungus. Bipolaris cynodontis, was determi
ned, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compound 1 was
found to be related to cochlioquinone derivatives that had previously
been isolated as phytotoxins from a culture of B. bicolor, in which t
he addition of acetone occurred at one of the quinone carbonyl groups
of cochlioquinone. Compound 1 inhibited the root growth of Italian rye
grass, one of the host plants of B. cynodontis, by 50% at a concentrat
ion of 100 ppm.
