Abstract
PracticeRat(R) (Sharpoint, Reading PA) is a system containing a simula tion vein, artery and nerve, designed as an alternative to live animal use in microsurgical training. We find PracticeRat(R) to be more expe nsive than living models. However, it does decrease animal usage and p rovides a very convenient opportunity to practice microsurgical techni ques and procedures in a fairly realistic manner. Trainees can practic e anytime, for any length of time, wherever microscopes are available, In this regard we find PracticeRat(R) to be a useful addition to micr osurgical training programs and an excellent tool for skills maintenan ce.
