J. Soga et Y. Yakuwa, DUODENAL CARCINOIDS - A STATISTICAL EVALUATION OF 635 CASES COLLECTEDFROM THE LITERATURE, Journal of experimental & clinical cancer research, 15(1), 1996, pp. 3-10
This statistical study was performed to clarify the characteristic fea
tures of duodenal carcinoids and supply researchers in this field with
new detailed and reliable information for their subsequent investigat
ion. In the statistical analysis of 635 cases of duodenal carcinoids c
ollected from the world literature, the following characteristics were
disclosed. The significant preponderance was found in the first porti
on of the duodenum as sites of the lesions, small tumor-size of 10 mm
or less, lymph nodes as the site of metastases, the B growth pattern o
f histology, the submucosa as the depth of invasion, somatostatin prod
uction detected by immunohistochemistry, gastric cancer as the associa
tion of chronological dual malignancy, von Recklinghausen's neurofibro
matosis, and psammoma bodies in neoplastic glandular spaces. Among the
se, it was in particular emphasized that somatostatin production along
with psammoma bodies in glandular structures should be evaluated in c
ases of duodenal carcinoid (carcinoid somatostatinoma).
