Spin-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution x-r
ay photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the valence electronic struct
ure of ferromagnetic Fe, Co, Co66Fe4Ni1B14Si15, and Ni are reported, a
nd compared with theoretical densities of states. Agreement between th
eory and experiment is very good for ferromagnetic Fe and Co66Fe4Ni1B1
4Si15. For metallic Co, experiment agrees poorly with theory incorpora
ting a 1.5 eV exchange splitting, suggesting a reduced (1.2 eV) exchan
ge splitting attributable to valence electron correlation in Co metal.
Ferromagnetic Ni shows poor agreement between experiment and theory,
particularly in the up arrow(-)spin channel. (C) 1998 American Institu
