The literature on perfectionism was reviewed and was found to be prima
rily based on a biased sample of perfectionists in treatment and a neg
ative perception of perfectionism related to common definitions. This
negative set also influenced the empirical attempts to measure the con
struct. Based on these conclusions, the present study was designed to
examine perfectionism by locating and interviewing a sample of partici
pants who either considered themselves to be perfectionists or were co
nsidered to be perfectionists by others who knew them well. Results ar
e presented and discussed along with suggestions for further research
and the implications for counseling.
