Determination of Cs-135 and Cs-137/Cs-135 ratio by neutron activation
method is introduced in this study. Cesium isotopes in various radioac
tive and radwaste samples were chemically purified before neutron irra
diation. Cs-135 and the corresponding Cs-137/Cs-135 ratio were determi
ned by measuring the characteristic gamma rays emitted from the activa
ted nuclide Cs-136. Experimental results show that the neutron activat
ion is a practical analytical method for determination of Cs-135 and i
s convenient for researchers in a nuclear-based facility. The isotopic
ratio can be used to explain the possible origins as well as age of a
radioactive or radwaste sample.
