This Brief Report analyzes the dependence of helix deformation modes o
n the flow alignment properties of sheared cholesteric liquid crystals
. It is predicted that the helix of nonaligning cholesterics will not
unwind. On the other hand, for how-aligning cholesterics the helix wil
l unwind only if the shear rate is larger than a pitch-dependent thres
hold.
