Early and late results of 132 Mathieu urethroplasties are reported. Re
sponses to a standardized questionnaire of patients personal satisfact
ion were integrated into the retrospective evaluation of surgical outc
ome. The success rate regarding function and cosmetic result was 91.7%
at the time of discharge. During the postoperative period complicatio
ns occurred in 22% of the patients and required an average of 1.3 furt
her operations in 19.7%. Major complications were fistulas (18.9%), me
atal stenosis (4.6%) and urethral strictures (3.8%). Late results show
ed that 90.8% of all patients were satisfied with the final result. De
spite complications in every fifth child, the Mathieu urethroplasty pr
oves to be an efficient method for correction of distal hypospadias wi
thout or with only slight penile deviation. Advantages are the single-
