Abstract
We describe extensions to radar interferometric techniques used to stu dy irregularities in the upper atmosphere, based on techniques develop ed by radio astronomers. In particular, the techniques of 'self-calibr ation' and 'closure phase' offer great promise to radars that measure properties of stochastic geophysical targets. We show how useful exten sions arrive and comment upon implications of such techniques for the analysis of existing data and the design of new instruments. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
