Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common oral mucosal di
sease in North America. In some instances, RAS represents the central
feature of the multisystem disease complex Behcet's syndrome. This art
icle reviews the clinical features, contributing etiologic factors, an
d etiopathogenesis of RAS and Behcet's syndrome and describes therapeu
tic considerations and strategies essential to management of patients
suffering from recurrent mouth ulcers.
