Candidal infections are common oral-opportunistic microbial disease en
countered in the practice of stomatology and oral medicine. With chang
es in population demographics, there has been an overall increase in t
he incidence in opportunistic mycotic infections. The increased involv
ement of several candidal species in oral mucositis and perioral derma
titis is a significant problem in medical dental practice. Recent adva
nces in determining mechanisms involved and the clinical significance
of these mycotic organisms have confirmed the wide distribution, chron
icity, and other unique characteristics of Candida in localized mucosa
l and disseminated disease conditions. Correspondingly, the developmen
t of alternative antifungal regimens has enhanced the ability of clini
cians to manage candidal mucositis effectively.
