CHARACTERIZATION OF SYNTHETIC PRECURSORS OF P-TERT-BUTYLCALIX[4]ARENEAND P-TERT-BUTYLCALIX[8]ARENE - MECHANISMS OF FORMATION OF CALIX[4]ARENE AND CALIX[8]ARENE

The immediate precursors of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene and p-tert-butyl calix[8]arene have been determined by the characterization and the qua ntitative evaluation of molecules present during the reactions, as des cribed in ''Organic Synthesis'', The calix[4]arene could have two orig ins: the cyclization of linear species named pseudocalixarenes and the transformation of calix[8]arene in calix[ I]arene by ''molecular mito sis'', The calix[8]arene could be due to the cyclization of species ca lled hemicalixarenes.
