A new type of piezoelectric motor using a roller clutch mechanism is d
escribed. It consists of four stack-type piezoelectric actuators, a pa
ir of displacement amplifiers and two roller clutches. The constructio
n, operational principle and characteristics of the motor are describe
d. The motor can be operated at variable speed by changing the excitat
ion frequency of the piezo-stacks. Three different input wave shapes h
ave been used to investigate the electrical and mechanical characteris
tics of this prototype motor. The experimental results show the charac
teristics of the motor, maximum achievable torque and rotational speed
