Abstract
The total lipid fraction has been extracted from the white matter of f emale rats upon acute and moderate hypoxia. Using GC-MS to analyse the extracts, a number of hydrocarbon compounds (mainly aliphatic) and fr ee sterols were identified. Cholesterol, desmosterol, 24-ethylcholeste rol, 24-ethyl-4-cholesten-3-on and 22-propyl-3 beta-hydroxy-5,24-chole stadien were identified either by GC-MS analysis of standards, or by i nterpretation of their mass spectra. Other steroid compounds, due to t heir extremely low concentrations in extracts, were not identified.
