Some results are presented of radiation monitoring in Russia and the f
ormer USSR after the Chernobyl accident. The results are based on the
monitoring network which was in place at the time of the accident. Stu
dies of the patterns of Cs-137, I-131 and other radionuclides in the e
nvironment have been compared with predictions using models of some of
the mechanisms of release and transport. The results illustrate some
of the possibilities of radiation monitoring.
