Electret ionisation chambers for radon dosimetry have proven to be rel
iable and advantageous for practical use. Further improvements are the
oretically discussed in this paper. An optimum chamber shape has been
designed using a model to calculate the radon response. The main param
eters of such chambers are shown to depend on size. The computer simul
ation provides information about changes in the electret charge distri
bution during exposure and models the response as a function of the el
ectret voltage. The model has been extended to the gamma response of t
he chambers in order to minimise the influence of the background. The
optimum size of electret ionisation chambers can be determined from th
e results.
