The architecture of an anthropocentric Biomedical Information Manageme
nt System is proposed. The system is based on a network of computation
al components (agents) that users-experts in the biomedical domain, bu
t not in computer science-can define, use, and refine to serve their o
wn communication and documentation habits and needs. The innovation of
the proposal lies in the adoption of the Participatory Design methodo
logy, which involves users in the design of tools and their implementa
tion, organization and integration to perform the required biomedical
activities. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
