Abstract
Nisin stimulated oxygen consumption by nongrowing, glucose-metabolizin g Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil cells, indicating a proto nophore mode of action. A similar stimulation in E. coil cells osmotic ally stressed to disrupt the outer cell membrane confirmed the cytopla smic membrane as the site of nisin action and showed that nisin uptake was not prevented by the outer membrane.
