The velocity of positive and negative charges (charged defects) in sol
id deuterium was measured and the mobility and diffusion coefficient o
f the charges were determined. It was found that near the melting temp
erature in fields E<5 . 10(5) V/cm the mobility of charges of both sig
ns drops exponentially with decreasing temperature. The diffusion coef
ficient D-+ of the positive charges is several times higher than the d
iffusion coefficient D-- of the negative charges. The diffusion activa
tion energy for the sample Delta(-)approximate to 480 K for negative c
harges and Delta(+) approximate to 340 K for positive charges. This is
close to the published values of the activation energy of self-diffus
ion of molecules Delta(s) = 270 - 330 K. It is natural to conjecture t
hat the diffusion of positive changes, like the self-diffusion of mole
cules, is controlled by their interaction with vacancies. (C) 1996 Ame
