This article summarises cardiac examination by Doppler ultrasonography
in domestic carnivores. In the first parr of this article the physica
l principles of the Doppler effect are described. The second part outl
ines the three modes of use for the Doppler effect (pulse, continuous
and colour). The third part is concerned with normal Doppler ultrasono
graphy examinations. The final part of the article deals with practica
l applications of this technique using examples of clinical cases to i
llustrate : exploration of the majority of congenital heart diseases a
nd more in-depth study of certain acquired heart diseases.
