Abstract
New information and communications technologies are rapidly changing w ork practices and work sites throughout the world. In the development of these technologies, the perspectives and concerns of workers need t o be heard. Work-oriented design, based on field studies, can contribu te to technologies that provide improved opportunities and conditions for workers. In so doing, however, work-oriented design necessarily co nfronts the reality of power struggles over the design of work.
