G. Nicoletto et al., THE EFFECT OF MICROSTRUCTURE ON FRACTURE-TOUGHNESS OF POLYCRYSTALLINEALUMINA, Fatigue & fracture of engineering materials & structures, 19(1), 1996, pp. 119-128
A study of the dependence of the fracture toughness on the microstruct
ural morphology of polycrystalline materials is presented. The microst
ructure of several aluminas was characterized by thermal etching and i
mage analysis. The fracture toughness of these materials was then dete
rmined by bridge-indentation pre-cracking followed by a four-point ben
ding test procedure. A SEM investigation of the mechanisms of crack pr
opagation was also carried out. The observed microstructure-related fr
acture toughness responses are discussed.
