Abstract
Complexes of the general formula trans-[M (acetylene)(2)(PR(3))(2)] (M = Pd, Pt; R = Me, Et, Pr; acetylene = extended, mesomorphic acetylene ligand) were synthesised and their liquid crystal properties evaluate d. Platinum complexes with PMe(3) gave rather high temperature nematic phases, but when PEt(3) was used, nematic phases of a wide range were obtained; the use of PPr3 totally destabilised the nematic phase. Ana logous palladium complexes were synthesised but decomposed before melt ing.
