Abstract
The hydrodynamic equations for flow past a finite barrier within a 'bo okshelf' aligned smectic A liquid crystal are solved. Solutions are fo und for the flow components within (v(x)) and normal (v(z)) to the sme ctic layers. The behaviour of the v(z) component is confirmed by exper imental observation of both the buckling instability and a permeative flow induced S-A to S-C phase transition.
