G. Francois et al., ANTIPLASMODIAL ACTIVITIES AND CYTOTOXIC EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS EXTRACTS AND SESQUITERPENE LACTONES FROM NEUROLAENA-LOBATA, Planta medica, 62(2), 1996, pp. 126-129
Aqueous and lipophilic extracts of Neurolaena lobata (Asteraceae), obt
ained from Guatemala, were tested against Plasmodium falciparum in vit
ro. Moreover, sesquiterpene lactones, of the germacranolide and furano
heliangolide type, isolated from N. lobata, were shown to be active ag
ainst P. falciparum in vitro. In addition to their antiplasmodial acti
vity, their cytotoxic effects on human carcinoma cell lines were evalu
ated. Structure-activity relationships are discussed.
