The paper describes the works of the laboratory of non-verbal communic
ation (NVC) involved in research into non-verbal means and processes o
f communication. The specificity of the laboratory consists in the stu
dy of NVC problems not only on the model traditional for Western and R
ussian science (spoken language) but also on the model of artistic cre
ativity. A most complete classification was worked out in the laborato
ry of various kinds of non-verbal information. Regularities of their p
erception are studied in persons of different age and of different pro
fessional categories. A model of a two-channel (verbal-non-verbal) sys
tem of communication between people is suggested. A concept of emotion
al ear is formulated for the first time which is considered to be one
of the most important perceptual parts of the NVC system. A notion abo
ut an artistic type of man is developed in the light of the NVC theory
. Theoretical studies are oriented to the solution of a number of appl
ied problems in the field of professional selection, pedagogics, crimi
nal law, medical psychology.
