The role of scholarship in physical education in the liberal arts coll
ege is discussed, placing it within the context of Ernest Boyer's (199
0) landmark publication, Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities for the
Professoriate. Boyer forces physical educators to consider the problem
s and issues that confront the academy and the role of physical educat
ion in it. Pondering the specific issue of scholarship in physical edu
cation is especially appropriate in light of the debates that have rec
ently raged over the place and priority of scholarship in the academy.
Particular attention is paid to the role of scholarship in the libera
l arts institutions that house physical education.
