The extraction of copper(II) from its solutions containing varying amo
unts of ammonium sulphate (1-4 M) over a pH range of 2 to 10 using Hos
tarex DK-16 in kerosene has been studied. Extraction seems to be less
at higher pH due to the formation of free ammonia, which subsequently
gives rise to non-extractable copper ammine complexes. The amount of c
opper extracted against pH is shown in the distribution curves. Theore
tically calculated distribution values have been compared with the exp
erimental ones. The results were further substantiated with the FTIR s
pectra of the extracts.
