The influence of a laser surface treatment via short ultraviolet pulse
s on the electrochemical and corrosion characteristics of stainless st
eel and aluminum alloys was investigated. By choosing the laser parame
ters appropriately, a significant improvement in the corrosion behavio
r of the components can be acieved; the laser treatment was successful
ly applied to protect susceptible surface areas locally (e.g., at weld
er joints).
