Using electron impact and chemical ionization mass spectrometry with m
ethane and nitric oxide as reactant gases in conjunction with mass spe
ctral analysis of the dimethyl disulfide derivatives of unsaturated co
nstituents, 51 compounds have been identified in addition to the compo
unds previously found in the preorbital secretion of the grysbok Raphi
cerus melanotis. The compounds identified are saturated, monounsaturat
ed, and diunsaturated alcohols and formates, saturated and monounsatur
ated aldehydes, saturated carboxylic acids, gamma- and delta-lactones,
alkyl methyl sulfides, and beta-hydroxyalkyl acetates. All of these c
ompounds have unbranched structures. The constituent previously incorr
ectly identified as (Z)-5-tetradecen-1-ol, was found to consist of the
coeluting (Z)-7- and (Z)-8-tetradecenols.
