Abstract
A recently proposed model equation for the prediction of the Young's m odulus of elasticity of composite materials has been applied to platel et reinforced composites. The effect of platelet volume fraction, axia l ratio and orientation on the effective Young's modulus was assessed and the range of validity of the equation was discussed. The calculate d values were compared with experimental data drawn from the literatur e for platelet-containing glass, ceramic and metal matrix composites. Good agreement between experimental and calculated values was achieved . As the equation contains no fitting parameters, it is of great pract ical importance for Young's modulus prediction in platelet reinforced materials.
