Ba. Franklin et al., SNOW SHOVELING - A TRIGGER FOR ACUTE MYOCCARDIAL INFARCTION AND SUDDEN CORONARY DEATH, The American journal of cardiology, 77(10), 1996, pp. 855
Increased cardiac death due to shoveling of heavy snow has been report
ed both in the lay and medical press. We obtained cardiorespiratory me
asurements of 10 healthy, sedentary men during snow shoveling and maxi
mal treadmill testing, and our results and those of other investigator
s suggest that the combination of vigorous physical exertion plus a di
seased or susceptible heart, rather than the exertion itself, constitu
tes the major cardiovascular risk of snow shoveling.
