Abstract
Fluid mechanics enters into many aspects of metallurgical processing o perations involved in the extraction and refining of ferrous and non-f errous metals. This papa describes mathematical models for slab, thin slab and strip casting operations. It is concluded that inclusion floa t-out in the tundish and mould and the elimination of slag entrainment during the emptying of ladies and tundishes during casting, are neede d for optimizing steel quality, particularly for thin slab and strip c asting operations.
