Gb. Vai et al., 1ST DIRECT RADIOMETRIC DATING OF THE TORTONIAN MESSINIAN BOUNDARY, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie 2, Mecanique, physique, chimie, sciences de l'univers, sciences de la terre, 316(10), 1993, pp. 1407-1414
New volcanogenic layers found in the Northern Apennines of Romagna at
the Tortonian/Messinian transition have been dated. The Globorotalia s
uterae FAD yielded a date of 7.72+/-0.15 Ma (1 sigma) (K/Ar on biotite
s). The boundary taken as the Globorotalia conomiozea FAD is closely p
redated by 7.33 Ma (K/Ar on biotite and Ar-39/Ar-40 on plagioclase). A
n age of 7.26+/-0.10 Ma for the boundary is suggested. There are appro
priate conditions for placing here the related Global Stratotype Secti
on and Point.
