In this essay I try to show how the Ostrogorski Paradox-a relatively n
eglected problem in democratic theory-is conceptually related to other
conceptual problems (the Anscombe Paradox, the Condorcet Paradox, the
intensity problems and the problems arising from logrolling practices
). The Ostrogorski Paradox can appear in all forms of representative d
emocracy. However, direct democracy is vulnerable to the other, equall
y disturbing, paradoxes. Thus, one influential argument for direct dem
ocracy is refuted.
