Abstract
In this paper we study the problem of computing the downtime distribut ion in a time interval of a binary monotone system comprising stochast ically independent components, with exponentially distributed life tim es and arbitrary repair time distributions. An approximation formula i s established, and compared with standard Markov and normal expression s. It is shown by performing Monte Carlo simulation that the establish ed formula produces good results. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited.
