Abstract
Analysis of the conditions for amplification without population invers ion both in V and Lambda Raman-like configurations are given. A simple collision-driven model for potential experiments is considered. Effec ts of inhomogeneous broadening of the transitions on coherent coupling are discussed. The crucial importance of these effects for the choice of the proper transition schematics is shown. Numerical analysis of t he conditions for amplification without inversion and four-wave mixing in energy-level configurations, relevant to the experiments, which ar e under way, is given.
