Abstract
A method to estimate continuous distributions obtained from an experim ent in the form of a linear combination of cubic B-splines is consider ed. An algorithm to choose the optimal number of splines, their coeffi cients and errors is proposed. The method can also be applied to detec tor resolution functions and acceptance (obtained by Monte Carlo metho ds) smoothing when solving the unfolding problem.
