Ph. Shipway et Im. Hutchings, FRACTURE OF BRITTLE SPHERES UNDER COMPRESSION AND IMPACT LOADING .1. ELASTIC STRESS DISTRIBUTIONS, Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Defects and mechanical properties, 67(6), 1993, pp. 1389-1404
Numerical values are derived for the elastic stress fields in spheres
under conditions of quasi-static compression and free impact against p
lane targets. The results are relevant to the brittle fracture of sphe
res under compression and impact loading and allow some anomalies obse
rved in indirect methods of tensile testing to be clarified.
