Two rare mutant forms were found in progeny of the same rye hybrid. On
e of them was characterized by brown culm, and another, by lightly col
ored nodes at earing time. Each of the mutant forms was inherited as m
onogenic recessive. Gene symbols In and cb were proposed for light nod
es and brown culm, respectively. One more gene, the recessive allele o
f which is epistatic to the recessive allele of the cb gene, may also
exist. Both the In and ch genes were inherited independently of the ge
nes vi1 (anthocyanless), epr1 (waxless), el1 (liguleless), Ddw1 (domin
ant short stem), and of each other. The In gene was not linked with th
e genes ct2 (dwarf) and R (red auricles), and the cb gene was not link
ed with the genes mn (multinodosum) and np (dwarf).
