Abstract
This paper presents a number of laterally substituted liquid crystalli ne compounds which have been synthesized by systematically varying bot h the position and the type of the lateral substituent. The influences of such structural changes on the physico-chemical properties of new compounds are discussed and compared with those of the corresponding l aterally unsubstituted analogues.
