Basestock formation influences coated paper quality through coating we
ight distribution. This study investigates the effect of basestock for
mation on the optical and physical properties of coated paper. Better
formation produced more uniform pore structure for the basestock and t
he coating layer. The mean pore size decreased with increasing formati
on index. Improving formation reduced the bulk and roughness of the ba
se-stock and increased the basestock gloss and the light-scattering co
efficient of the coated paper. No significant correlation existed betw
een the formation index and the roughness and gloss of the coated pape
r.
