The bulk photopolymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) with phenylsilan
e was performed to produce poly(MA)s containing phenylsilyl moiety pre
sumably as an end group. It was found that while the polymerization yi
elds and intrinsic viscosities decreased, the TGA residue yields and t
he relative intensities of SiH IR stretching bands increased with incr
easing molar ratio of phenylsilane over MA. The phenylsilane seemed to
significantly influence on the photopolymerization as both chain init
iation and chain transfer agents.
