G. Alexander et al., MEASUREMENT OF HEAVY-QUARK FORWARD-BACKWARD ASYMMETRIES AND AVERAGE BMIXING USING LEPTONS IN MULTIHADRONIC EVENTS, Zeitschrift fur Physik. C, Particles and fields, 70(3), 1996, pp. 357-369
A measurement of the forward-backward asymmetries of e(+)e(-) --> Z(0)
--> <b(b)over bar> and e(+)e(-) --> Z(0) --> <c(c)over bar> using ele
ctrons and muons produced in semileptonic decays of bottom and charm h
adrons is presented. Two new variables designed to optimize flavour se
paration are used in a maximum likelihood fit to a sample of events co
ntaining one or two identified leptons, allowing the simultaneous extr
action of the b and c quark forward-backward asymmetries as well as th
e average B-0-B-0 mixing. Using all data collected by OPAL up to the e
nd of 1994, the asymmetries are measured to be: A(FB)(b) = (5.5 +/- 2.
4 +/- 0.3)% A(FB)(c) = (-7.5 +/- 3.4 +/- 0.6)% at [root s] = 89.52 GeV
, A(FB)(b) = (9.06 +/- 0.51 +/- 0.23)% A(FB)(c) = (6.00 +/- 0.67 +/- 0
.52)% at [root s] = 91.24 GeV, A(FB)(b) = (11.7 +/- 2.0 +/- 0.3)% A(FB
)(c) = (14.1 +/- 2.8 +/- 0.9)% at [root s] = 92.94 GeV. For the averag
e B-0-(B-0) over bar mixing a value of: <(chi)over bar) = 0.1107 +/- 0
.0062 +/- 0.0055, is obtained, where in each case the first error is s
tatistical and the second systematic.
