Abstract
On the basis of the J-matrix formalism, a new method is formulated for studying the continuous spectrum of a three-body system. The method e ssentially relies on the correct description of the continuous spectru m of a chosen two-particle subsystem. It is shown that, for energies a bove the threshold of three-body breakup, this method is more effectiv e than the method of pseudostates.
