ON THE APPLICABILITY OF THE QUANTITATIVE THEORY OF COPOLYMERIZATION TO COPOLYMERIZATION WITH PREFERENTIAL SORPTION OF MONOMERS

In monomer feed mixtures of different composition, the coefficients of preferential sorption of acrylonitrile lambda by the acrylonitrile-st yrene copolymers were measured. The values of sorption coefficient lam bda were shown to be proportional to the relative content of acrylonit rile in the copolymer and the monomer feed mixture. As a result, the p ropagation, partition coefficient for the monomers gamma, which takes into account the deviation of the monomer concentrations in the zone o f chain propagation from their feed concentrations, was constant. This condition is necessary and sufficient for the applicability of the Ma yo-Lewis scheme and the corresponding theory of copolymerization io co polymerization under the conditions of preferential sorption of one of the monomers.
