A series of substituted barium ferrites of M-type, Ba(CoTi)(x)Fe12-2xO
19, and W-type, BaZn2-yCoyFe16O27, were prepared as nanostructured pow
ders using the stearic acid gel method. Well-crystallized nanocrystall
ine hexaferrite particles of 10-20 nm have been obtained at temperatur
es 650-750 degrees C lower than those of other methods. The structures
and micrographs of the nanocrystalline materials were characterized b
y X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The phase co
mposition of the intermediate products during the synthesis has been i
nvestigated by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analys
is, IR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis.
