Abstract
We discuss the influence of vegetation fires on the chemical compositi on of the atmosphere and compare the contribution of these fires to at mospheric pollution with other natural and anthropogenic sources. In t he case of South Africa, the comparison shows that for CO2, No-x and S O2, industrial coal use is the largest contributor whereas for CO and Ch(4), vegetation fires contribute the most. As a source of atmospheri c No-x, motor vehicles are more important than emissions from veld fir es.
