This article first briefly considers some of the transitions occurring
in workplaces and families and implications for human resource manage
ment. It then outlines the European approach to work and family issues
and argues that despite apparent differences from the US approach, bo
th point to the need for workplace culture change within a partnership
framework. We propose an expanded business case for organizational ch
ange which incorporates the perspectives of a range of stakeholders. F
inally we propose an agenda for further change and indicate some relat
ed directions for future research.
