During the palaeomagnetic study of an Upper Permian-Lower Triassic (In
duan) continuous sequence from the Mangislak area in western Kazakhsta
n (44 degrees N 52 degrees E), the thermal demagnetization of the samp
les has shown two main components of NRM. The first component (A) is c
learly post-folding (D = 12 degrees, I = 64 degrees, alpha(95) = 7 deg
rees). The second component (B) has higher unblocking temperatures. It
is a prefolding, either normal or reversed, component (D = 12 degrees
, I = 31 degrees, alpha(95) = 7 degrees, VGP: 61 degrees N 206 degrees
E). The magnetostratigraphy distinguishes two short normal periods be
tween three longer reversed ones, which suggests a possible location o
f the P/T boundary near the base of the section. The palaeolatitude de
duced from the inclination favours the hypothesis of shortening of the
Turan plate during the Kimmerian tectonics.
